Profer Hijab

I'm not here to judge anyone, because that job is only for Allah SWT. Only Allah can judge a person because Allah knows best. I'm not trying to lecture, but what I'm trying to do is to remind myself and others. Lately I've been seriously concerned about what's going on with some sisters' hijabs.

When we wear hijab, we have to remember that we are representing Islam. By wearing hijab inappropriately you are giving a bad image of Islam and Islamic modesty to others. Modesty of clothing and actions is very important in the faith of Islam. Before I converted to Islam I actually thought it was allright for muslim women to show some hair and to wear tight clothing with hijab, why? Because I saw a lot of muslim women dressing up that way, so I assumed that was a proper hijab.

I always wondered why do you have to wear that scarf if your hair is showing anyways? That's the reason why it was kind of difficoult to understand as a non-muslim why do muslim women wear hijab, is it really a religious obligation or just some cultural thing? Alhamdulillah, later on I realized the purpose of hijab and found the beauty of it.

Another thing to remember is that we are also representing ourself to others, both muslims and non-muslims. If we want to be recognized as believing women, muslimahs, who don't want to be annoyed or sexually harassed, why should we show your hair and all those curves?

Surah an-Nur ayah 31: And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful.

Surah al-Ahzab ayah 59: O Prophet! Say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the faithful to draw their outergarments (jilbabs) close around themselves; that is better that they will be recognized and not annoyed. And God is ever Forgiving, Gentle.

If your hair is showing - THAT'S NOT HIJAB, but a cultural headscarf. If your clothing is tight and reveals your curves and the shape of your body - THAT'S NOT HIJAB either! I'm not trying to sound too harsh or judgemental here but come on! What's the purpose of hijab if it doesn't really cover what's supposed to be covered up?

If you want to show your hair to everyone and if you want to wear tight clothing, plz don't say you're wearing "hijab" because that's obviously not the case. It's not hijab, but a cultural headscarf. It's good to take a look in the mirror every now and then and ask yourself does my hijab meet the criteria of Islamic hijab as Allah SWT described in the holy Quran? Do I understand what hijab means?

If the answer is NO, you know what to do. A muslim should be Quran orientated, the Quran solves so many dilemmas! Study the Quran, especially the Surah an-Nur and Surah al-Ahzab and read what does it say about hijab. I guarantee it doesn't say "wear a headscarf but show all your curves" or "cover your head but show some highlighted bangs" It's not in there, sorry! We should be proud of our hijabs, alhamdulillah we have the freedom to cover our bodies and our beauty from strange men!
